How to change the main entity status field

I have a parent entity called Proposition and a child entity called Protocol. When a record is inserted in the main entity, its status is "Not Protocoled" in the main entity, and in the child entity, when the protocol number is generated, I have to update the status of the main entity to "Protocolated".
Can anyone help???
